Yakult (ヤクルト) is a probiotic dairy product made by fermenting a mixture of skimmed milk with a special strain of the 6.5 billion bacterium Lactobacillus casei Shirota.

The natural bacteria in the body is responsible for breaking down of the food, absorption of the nutrient and suppressing the bad bacteria in the gut. The four dominant bacterial phyla in the human gut are Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Proteobacteria. The gut flora helps to neutralise some toxic by-products of digestion, reduce harmful substances such as toxins and carcinogens. carcinogens (cancer producing cells) and discourage ‘bad’ bacteria and yeasts. Gut flora also helps to stimulate the digestive process and aid the absorption of nutrients, as well as producing vitamins including B and K. The most plentiful and important bacteria in the small intestine is the Lactobacillus species. Lactobacillus helps ferment indigestible carbohydrates and supports the breakdown of sugars in dairy products.

Prescription of antibiotics can result into death of good and bad bacteria in gut and urinary tract. —

Yalkult when taken minimizes the death of these bacteria as billions of live bacteria reaches the intestine without breaking down which plays a delicate balance between the good health and the well being. Our digestive system is home to trillions of bacteria where some are beneficial and some are harmful. Beneficial bacteria can help in digestion, make vitamins (such as vitamin K) and stimulate immune cells. Harmful bacteria disturbs the activity of the beneficial ones and produce harmful substances that affect your health.

Unbalanced diet, high stress, less sleep, and lack of daily exercise can all together put digestive system out of its balance, which then gives harmful bacteria the opportunity to multiply. As a result, increase chances from suffrage from poor digestion or weak immunity. –

Yalkult helps in Irritable bowel syndrome, Inflammatory bowel disease, diarrhea, Skin conditions, like eczema, Urinary and vaginal health, Preventing allergies and colds, Oral health.

One of the major causes of diarrhea is a disturbed intestinal flora (a good bacteria) which is maintained by yakult and boost the immune system. It regulates the bowel habit and help in relieving out constipation and also help on gastrointestinal infection. Plus it is gluten free and suitable for vegetarians. —

Trust me when I say it really help out diarrhea and constipation. I don’t remember the last time I had a bad bowel after continuously drinking yakult. All we have is busy life, #wakeup at 6, reach #office at 9 and this can lead to serious bowel problem. Everyone goes through it. Gulping down ‘Metrogel’ just to relieve out that stomach ache is not the solution we want. —

But “what about its taste”. So once you start drinking it, you get habitual of the taste and actually start liking it a lot. Remember your first beer!! in India, Yakult comes only in one flavour but cash them outside and you might get more flavours like in Japan. —

  • SUGAR : Sucrose is used in regular yakult containing 11gms/ 50 calorie a bottle and stevia leaves which are 250-300 times sweeter than the regular one but contains 4gms/30 calorie a bottle for yakult light. The quantity of the bottle is less therefore the sugar content doesn’t really matter in weight loss or anything except in diabetes (doctor!) A small amount is required for fermentation, to allow the strain to grow and multiply. Sugar is later added for taste; the lactic acid
produced by the LcS strain would otherwise make the product taste sour.
  • Skim milk powder : The sole purpose of the milk used in Yakult is to provide a solution to encourage the growth and viability of the live beneficial bacteria, while providing an excellent medium to deliver the probiotic to the human gut.
  • Ultra heat treatment : milk solution is heated to 120⁰C for a few seconds; this temperature eliminates the risk of harmful microbial growth.
    -(according to Yakult, Australia)

It is recommended that Yakult should be taken on a daily basis, up to 1-2 bottles per day for adults, during or after meals. Even during pregnancy you can include it into your diet. Yakult is not meant to quench the thirst, it is only a probiotic drink. It is not a replacement of yogurt or milk, but should be taken in addition to these products. Since it comes in a small bottle, you can have it comfortably and make it part of balanced daily diet. Small bottle is for one complete dosage and hence more hygienic.
